I guess they still have still things to say and to show here for us. But now it's up to them. With this short but *passionate* message, I leave my duty.

Unbelievable! As soon as I finished to translate in my poor english the last post, I received a mail from M&N. Here it is.

Ciao a tutti,
eccoci qua, mancano 6 giorni all'arrivo a Martinica e tre giorni dal momento che la nave dirigerà verso l'isola, siamo quasi alla fine di questa strana lunga avventura.
Abbiamo ancora la speranza, piccola, di ritrovare la barca felicemente ormeggiata a qualche banchina dei Caraibi, chissà...
La vita a bordo prosegue con la consueta routine e finalmente le condizioni del mare hanno permesso di immergere il Robot per più giorni. Noi stiamo bene anche se non vediamo l'ora di arrivare, anche se l'ospitalità che abbiamo ricevuto a bordo è stata più che amichevole. A proposito un grazie al Capitano, all'equipaggio e alla equipe scientifica.
Un saluto a tutti quelli che ci hanno seguito e un grazie enorme a tutte le mail di solidarietà che abbiamo ricevuto.

Dear All,

here we are, 6 days to go and just three before the ship will head for Martinique. Our strange and long adventure is leading toward the end.
We still have a very tiny hope to find our boat happily tied up at some caribbian dock... but, very very tiny. The ship's life is running as usual and, actually, the sea conditions in the last days has allowed the Robot to be diving.
We are fine even if we can't wait the moment to see the land, though the hospitality on the ship has been more than friendly. A big thank you to the Capitain, the whole crew and the scietific crew for everything.
A big hallo to all of you that have followed us for all this time and a special thank for all the beautiful email we received.

Dal momento che non ricevo notizie da almeno una settimana e dal momento che Federica in un commento ci ha chiesto i dettagli interessanti sulla nave, pubblicherò la mail che Marco mi aveva inviato tempo addietro e che vi ho detto che avevo omesso. In effetti rileggendola è interessante, Scusatemi per l'omissione :-) E ricordate che descrive situazioni di ormai dieci giorni fa.

Qui si procede hanno immerso il robot che ha avuto un problema tecnico che hanno risolto ma a causa delle onde il recupero è stato un po' difficile per cui adesso aspettano condizioni molto più calme. il vento continua ad esserci anche se il mare è sceso a circa 2.5- 3.5 m ancora troppo per loro. In realtà l'attività è abbastanza continua, notte e giorno. Usano soprattutto un attrezzo che calano a 35000 metri che raccoglie, comandato da un computer, campioni di acqua a varie profondità che vengono analizzati etc... e questo succede continuamente. La nave si muove poco da un punto all'altro e poi usa questo sistema di stazionamento collegato al GPS che attiva automaticamente le eliche per tenerla in posizione.
Ho chiaccherato con uno dei ricercatori, che ha quasi finito l'università' e sta iniziando ad essere ben pagato, lui in realtà passa circa 8 mesi l'anno in varie navi di ricerca, e mi diceva che le richieste per persone come lui sono numerosissime, tipo adesso può scegliere tra tre diverse
strutture di ricerca con cui lavorare, probabilmente andrà a SanDiego. Comunque questa realtà' è abbastanza cospicua, i più attivi e bravi sono i tedeschi, i francesi ed ovviamente gli americani.
Il capo della spedizione si chiama Nicole ed eè una donna molto simpatica e frizzante, molto curiosa ed intelligente. Devo dire che nonostante per loro questo problema del weather sia molto serio conservano un aplomb invidiabile.
Sai quanto gasolio consuma al giorno questa nave? tra 15 e 20 tonnellate al
giorno, cioe' tra 15.000 e 20.000 litri al giorno... not bad.
Adesso sono 8 giorni che siamo qui... a volte siamo un po stufi a volte molto a volte non tanto.

Since I have no news from a week and since Federica asked me to post some details about the vessel, I'll post for you the mail that Marco sent me days ago and that I left out. My fault: in effect it's interesting. I ask you to forgive me. Just remember when you read this that is pretty old, i.e.it describes situation of ten days ago.

Here the works are proceeding. They dip the robot that had a technical problem that they solved but the recover was tricky due to the waves. So now they're waiting for better weather conditions. There still some wind and even if the wave are now smaller (around 2.5 -3.5 m) they're still to big for them. Actually the activity on board is pretty frantic. They work day and night. They use a strange object that they dip to 35.000 m down below the surface that is computer assisted and takes samples of water at different depths to be analysed. And this is done continuously. They try to keep the boat in position and thay have a system connected to the GPS that activates the propellers so to keep the ship steady and in position.

I talked to one of the guys in charge of the researches and he has almost finished his studies and he's starting to work and to be payed enough. He spends almost 8 months a year on board od different ship like this and he told that there is a good demand for people like him. So he now can choose between three different team to work with, and he'll probably go to San Diego. Anyhow this situation is quite normal: the best team are german, french and - of course - american.

The chief of the team on board is a woman. Her name is Nicole and she's very nice to everybody, very clever and bright. I must say that in spite of this problem with the wetaher, they keep very cool.

Do you know how much "drinks" a ship like this? Between 15 and 20 tons of gasoil a day...not bad. Now it's eight days we're here... sometimes we're a little tired, sometimes a lot, and sometimes we're just ok.

Venticinque universitari tedeschi ubriachi hanno ingaggiato una gigantesca scazzottata con la ciurma. Hanno vinto i ricercatori, inaspettatamente, e ora hanno il controllo della nave e stanno dirigendo verso l'Antartide alla ricerca di un gamberetto che nasce già surgelato (mmm... questa è buona, quasi quasi me la gioco io).

Come vivete. Che temperatura c'è. Se è estate o no. se prendete il sole in coperta. Cosa leggete. La stanza dove dormite. Se fate sesso e a che ora. Come siete vestiti. E secondo me quasi tutti si chiedono cosa siete riusciti a portarvi via dalla barca quando siete scappati.

Insomma dettagli che non sappiamo...
Siamo e meno tredici: due settimane. Dobbiamo far succedere qualcosa.

Certo, ti capisco...
Allora: il party è andato benone, abbiamo fatto il barbecue sul ponte a base di pesce e wurstel, molto buono, poi "gran befuta" fino all' alba. Naida ormai è diventata amica di tutti e partecipa a queste notti alcoliche, io molto meno: in quanto orso passo le serate in cabina a leggere.
Stiamo leggendo tanto, ho riletto Catcher in the Rye (Il giovane Holden) in inglese che è un libro straordinario e che va letto assolutamente in inglese, poi Mutis, e adesso stiamo attaccando la biblioteca della barca che però è in tedesco eccetto alcuni libri in inglese del tipo thriller facili, che però non sono malaccio; in particolare ne ho appena finito uno mooolto bello: PAranoia di Joseph Finder...mah.
Poi, ci sono circa 26 gradi di giorno e 24 di notte, il sole è fortissimo e caldo ma soffia sempre il vento, si sta molto bene.
La nostra cabina è in realta l'ospedale: non è il massimo ma diciamo che funziona..
Ogni tanto pensiamo alla barca e abbiamo ancora la speranza che la si ritrovi, secondo i miei calcoli potrebbe arrivare in zona Caraibi piu' o meno quando ci arriveremo noi.
Ieri abbiamo scoperto che la notte del secondo giorno ci è passata a 4 miglia un porta container americano che andava a Houston!!! Il capitano mi ha detto che non ci hanno chiesto niente perchè pensavano che volessimo comunque andare ai Caraibi. Io ero sbalordito... sarebbe stato perfetto, sempre ammesso che la nave si fosse fermata per prenderci, come sai non e'
una faccenda semplicissima... va be' si vede che dovevamo stare qua.
Adesso gli ho spiegato che QUALSIASI terra per noi va bene, vediamo che succede anche se finora quella e' stata l'unica nave che abbiamo avvistato per il resto... dai inventa un po' di roba che mi sembri bravissimo...eheheh

it's a few days that we don't have news from M&N, and someone even called me to ask if I had any new. Actually the other day I left out a mail from Marco talking about sone tech details about the ship they're on. I hadn't the heart of publishing them, because I know you'd like a different kind of news. So I wrote to Marco. Here you have my mail and his answer.

I have a public here pushing: you created this situation and now it's up to you bailing me out.
I cannot string along them with stories as "how much fuel the ship needs". Do you have an idea of how much they care about that?

We're loosing our audience. I can feel it.

I need something new, something fresh.
The story of the shipwreck sent us to the sky, and now we cannot afford leaving the tension falling down.

We need maybe a sex scandal: tha captain having a love affair with the head of the scientific team.

The pictures have been appreciated: keep on that way!

For instance: you were talkin' about a party... how did the story end?
25 young german researchers, totally drunk, started an epic fight with the crew. The scientists - unexpectedly - won and now they're in control of the vessel, heading out for Antartic in search of a very rare shrimp that is already frozen when born.

Come on , Marco, put some energy in it!

Do you know what we do not know?
They way you live... How the weather is. If it is summer or not. If you sunbath on the deck. If you read and what. How do you dress. And - I'm sure this is something everybody wants to know - what you could take from Butch when you had to leave her.

All this details that we cannot imagine.

Sure, I got it...

So then... the party was great and we had bbq on the deck (fish and sausages), very very good, and then everybody drunk till dawn. Naida is now everybody's friend and she's taking part to this alcoolic nights. I stay more often in the cabin, spending my time reading.

We're reading a lot. I re-read The Cathcher in the Rye in English: it's a extrordinary book and one has absolutely to read it in English. The I read Mutis, and now we're attacking the library of the vessel, that is actually in German, a part some books in English, mainly B-thrillers.
But they're not bad, in particular the one I just read: Paranoia, by Joseph Finder.

During the day there are 26° and in the night they lower to 24°. The sun is blistering, but it's always windy and it's just perfect. Our cabin is the sick bay: it could be better but at the end it's ok.
Some time we think about our boat and we still have the hope that someone could find her. According to my guesstimate Butch could be in the Caribe more or less when we'll be there. Yesterday we found out that the night of the second day after the rescue a ship passed at two miles from us and they were heading to Houston! The captain said he didn't tell us nothing just because he thought that it was our intention to go in any case to the Caribbean Islands. I was astonished... it would have been perfect, admitted that the ship had stop to give us a lift, something that - as you know - is not very simple. Well... maybe it was just destiny for us to stay here.

Now I told him clearly that every harbour is okay for us. Let's see what happens, even if that was - until now - the one and only ship crossing our path. For the rest, it's up to you inventing something: you can do it great! :-))))

Well, this is it. We're a little tired, but in effect it's only 13 days more... they'll pass by.

grazie per le notizie che anche se non diminuiscono la pena di sapereButch abbandonata alla deriva (ma chissà, magari è GATTA e ritorna!) ci conferma che il nostro CAPITANO è il migliore che ci sia!
Immagino che morirete di pizzichi, soprattutto dopo la tirata e il pericolo corso, ma magari in questo rallentamento forzato, questo 'slow navigation' c'è il senso di darvi il tempo necessario per assorbire la perdita di butch e tornare a casa con la mente e il cuore aperti.
Elisa naturalmente sta lavorando gia` sullo script di "Water and FIre": credo che si parta dall'incendio di coral canyon e si passi quasi subito al naufragio nell'atlantico dopo rocambolesca fuga in moto dei due protagonisti rincorsi dal capitano dei vigili del fuoco incazzatissimo per le dichiarazioni dello schillaci alla televisione; di lì i due si infilano a marina del rey e braccati dalle volanti saltano su una vela e partono; poi, con un po' di licenza poetica circumnavigano l'Africa dove si uniscono ovviamente ai pirati somali e assaltano navi americane (per vendicarsi del pompiere impazzito); fanno fortuna e stanno tornando ricchi come il conte di montecristo quando sono colti da tempeste nell'altlantico...e il resto lo sapete. Mi sembra che volesse scritturare schwarzenagher subito dopo la fine del suo mandato nella parte di marco data la somiglianza fisica e per naida si era pensato alla nicole kidman che è bella E tosta.

Ah! non so cosa succede dopo il naufragio ma mi pare che i due protagonisti decidano di comprare un'altra barca con due loro amici di los angeles... e vissero a lungo, viaggiando, viaggiando.

The film starts with the famous coral canyon fire but goes rapidly to the shipwreck in the middle of the atlantic where schillaci and naida perched like di caprio at the end of the oceanographic boat look into the distance (straight at the audience) and we go to flashback: the flashback starts by showing our two protagonists escaping from the coral canyon house on fire with on their motorcycle hunted down by a supermad fire department chief who is furious at schillaci for his declarations to a local tv station regarding the incompetence of american fire men; schillaci and naida arrive at marina del rey harbor followed by dozens of police cars, fire tracks and elicopters; seeing that there is no escape on land, schillaci and naida jumps on
a sail boat named 'butch' and they sail away...but where?; towards east africa, of course, where schllaci joins somali pirats and takes his vengeance by attacking only american oil boats; they get filthy rich and like the count of montecristo they head back to america when the hurricane hits them in the middle of the atlantic...end of
flashback. Open ending...YOU SUGGEST IT! As for the cast, we though about Schwarzenager (after he is done with being governator) for the phisical similarity with Schillaci and Nicole Kidman, who is beautiful and tough for Naida...YOU SUGGEST YOUR PICKS

qui si procede. Siamo nel pieno della routine della nave
Adesso sono diventato il regista di bordo, nel senso che mi hanno incaricato delle riprese di ciò che succede.
Il punto è che ancora non riescono ad immergere il Robot che è il topic più importante.
Il mare è molto meglio, ci sono sempre 25 nodi di vento ma l'onda è scesa a 2-2,5 metri, anche se molto incrociata.
Per loro non va ancora bene dato che le fasi più delicate sono l'immersione ed il recupero.
In sostanza ci si sveglia alle 7 per un briefing per decidere se si va o no, adesso mi sveglio anch'io in quanto documentarista del tutto...
Naida sta benone, sta diventando una campionessa di ping pong.

Everything is ok here. We're fully absorbed in the routine of the ship. Now I'm officialy the filmaker of the ship, charged of filming what's going on. The fact is that they still cannot dip the robot and this is their main worry. The sea conditions are much better now. We still have 25 knots but the sea swell - that has lowered to 2/2.5 m - is still very choppy. For them this isn't calm enough since the most delicate moments are the immersion and the recovery.
The awake is at 7, for the briefing, and I've to participate as filmaker. Naida she's just fine and she's becoming a ping pong champion.

And thursday there will be a big party on board!

haaaa, che cabala letteraria!!
in realta' qui' sono abbastanza fottuti dal tempo, hanno una specie di robot che devono immergere fino a 5000 metri (tipo titanic) ma non possono fare niente per le onde, per cui iniziano ad essere un po' nervosi anche perché credo che tutto cio' costi veramente un botto.
va be' comunque noi siamo un po stufelli... dobbiamo assolutamente trovare qualcosa per dare un senso a queste 3 settimane, ci proveremo.Per il resto stiamo benone, si mangia bene anche se un po' troppa carne. Naida fa la cura del sonno io quella del cibo, mi sa che tornerò con qualche kilotto in più.
Giochiamo tanto a ping pong.

I ricercatori sono molto carini e gentili, molto giovani bevono birra come solo i tedeschi possono fare ed ascoltano uno strano hip hop tedesco. Ci sono 46 persone a bordo, 23 di crew e 23 di ricercatori tecnici etc..

Insomma è una nave con il suo microcosmo.
Il mare continua ad essere grosso e nervoso, non prevedono un miglioramento prima di lunedì. A questo punto sono curioso di vedere il robot in azione. Stanno studiando questa profonda spaccatura, tipo canyon, che c'e' in mezzo all' Atlantico, dove il fondo va da 2500 metri fino a 4500 o più.
Nel fondo ci sono dei vulcanelli che sparano acqua a 200 gradi e ci sono dei gamberi che vivono in questa acqua caldissima senza essere bolliti, se ho capito bene questo e il motivo principale del loro interesse.
Comunque è brava gente. Davvero sono molto carini e gentili.

In reality, here on the ship, they are also quite fucked up with the weather, they have this kind of robot that they have to emerge in the water down to 5000 meters (something like Titanic) but they can´t do anything because of the waves, so they are starting to be a little nervous even because i think that all this operation costs a whole bunch of money. Oh well, in any case we are a little fed up already...we definetely have to find something to give some sense to these three weeks, we shall try. As for the rest we are fine, the food is great even if a little too much meat. Naida is doing the cure of sleeping and I am doing the one of eating, I think I will probably end up with few kilos more.
We play a lot of table tennis.
The researchers are very nice and kind, very young, they drink beer as only germans can do and they listen to some strange german hip hop. There are 46 people on board, 23 crew members and 23 scientists...today they guided us through the security procedure in case of abandoning the ship...it would be too funny if that would be the case...i´m joking of
course.
In any case, is a ship with its microcosmos.
The sea continues to be big and nervous, the ship rolls a lot, and the weather forecast does not get better before Monday, at least they hope so.
At this point I am quite curious to see the robot in action.
They are reasearching this very deep crack, like a canyon, that there is in the middle of Atlantic, where the depth goes from 2500 to 4500 and more.
In this deep canyon there are volcanos that erupt water of 200 degrees and there are certain kind of shrimps which live in this very hot water without being boiled, if I understood well this is the main motiv of their interest. In any case, these guys are really great people. Really, they are very kind.
So, I hope to send you some more of those interesting details soon. Now we have to go to sleep because it´s already 8.30 and here we eat dinner at 5.30.

Caro Bruno,

eccoci sulla Maria S. Merian una nave di ricerca tedesca il cui capitano Karl Friedhelm Von Staa nonostante all'inizio avessimo chiesto solo del gasolio ha deciso di interrompere le ricerche e fare piu' di cento miglia per assisterci.
Devo dire che è bellissimo sapere che in mare esistano queste cose.
Come sai la decisione di abbandonare la barca e' stata molto dura da prendere, alla fine abbiamo scelto la sicurezza sopratutto. Ottocento miglia ancora da fare ci sono sembrate troppe in quelle condizioni.
Il puntale dell'albero era ormai tenuto dal pagliolato del pavimento che infatti scricchiolava in un modo pazzesco, forse avrebbe tenuto forse no. In ogni caso stamattina lo splendido capitano mi è venuto a cercare per dirmi che di notte il vento è arrivato a forza 10 nel punto in cui abbiamo abbandonato Butch...
Il rescue è stato molto complicato, in quel momento soffiava a 35 nodi e soprattutto le onde erano davvero potenti, avevo chiesto di essere preso con un gommone ma all'inizio il Capitano mi ha chiesto di tentare di accostare la nave che lui aveva traversato alle onde sul lato sottovento, ma l'operazione si è rivelata impossibile con la nave che beccheggiava tantissimo, abbiamo rischiato di farci del male e abbiammo rotto il pulpito di prua. Al che nonostante dalla nave insistessero di riprovare, gli ho parlato di nuovo tramite il suo secondo Ralf Schmidt e si è convinto a mettere in acqua il gommone e comunque riprendere il gommone dal mare con noi sopra e' stato un altro bel numero... la barca si è allontanata alla deriva, a quel punto, ovviamente la tensione nervosa ci ha stesi...
Adesso stiamo bene, sulla nave sono splendidi e l'intero coordinamento del salvataggio e' stato straordinario, sia Roma che Parigi ci hanno seguito passo passo con attenzione e professionalità'.
La nostra barca deriva verso i Caraibi: magari ci arriva e magari qualcuno se la prende e la usa... boh... vediamo.

Adesso siamo qui in teoria fino al 13 febbraio con una tenue speranza di beccare un passaggio da qualche nave che bazzica queste parti... vediamo.

In ogni caso tutto ciò e stato ripreso con varie telecamere... quando arriviamo ci potrà essere un bel documento da mettere sul blog. Come le foto e il resto fatto a bordo.

Ho notizie! E sono buone. Marco mi ha chiamato, la comunicazione era molto disturbata, ma mi ha detto che mi ha scritto una mail, che non arriverà subito (i satelliti sono tipi pigri).

Quando arriverà potrò raccontarvi e non solo: potrò pubblicare il loro indirizzo e voi potrete rispondergli, seguendo alcune precise indicazioni tecniche.

I have some news, good ones! Marco called me, the comunication was very disturbed, but he told me that he wrote me an e-mail that probably will take some time to get to me (satellite are lazy guys).

When the e-mail will arrive I'll be able to tell you more details: I'll publish their new email address and you will be able to write them, following some precise instructions.

This all seems very good to me. They eated, and slept and on board they're just like stars. Naida in particular.

Notizie importanti/important news

Marco e Naida non sono più a bordo di Butch, ma su una nave tedesca che li ha raccolti. Butch ha avuto un problema strutturale che impediva di proseguire la navigazione in sicurezza e hanno dovuto abbandonare la barca.

Non sono stati corsi dei pericoli, anche se ovviamente Marco e Naida sono molto scossi, per quello che hanno passato e per aver dovuto abbandonare la loro barca.

Ora sono tranquilli, ripeto, e nessun pericolo è mai stato corso. Ma la situazione richiedeva questo intervento. Mi hanno chiamato ieri pomeriggio e ho dato subito l'allarme. Mi sembra di poter dire che il coordinamento tra il Ministero della Marina italiana e quello francese abbia funzionato molto bene.

Se avete bisogno di parlarmi potete scrivermi a questo indirizzo. Vibeinstitute++@gmail.com (togliete i due ++). Potrò darvi il mio numero di telefono. Ma le notizie sono queste, senza nessuna omertà.

Ora pare che la nave tedesca sia una nave oceanografica che sta compiendo delle ricerche nell'Atlantico. Da quel che so, non potrà tornare a terra (in Martinica) prima del 13 febbraio. Ma avremo poi altre notizie.



Marco e Naida are not on Butch anymore, but on a german vessel. Butch had a structural problem that couldn't allow them to keep on sailing safe and Marco and Naida had to leave her.

They've never been in life danger but they would have if they didn't take this very hard decision. Of course they're both very shocked for what they went through and for being forced to abandone their boat.

Now they're ok. I spoke with them a few minutes ago. I repeat: they've never been in danger. But when they called me yesterday we talked and agreed that the alarm needed to be sent. The cooperation between the italian and french navy ministries worked very well.

It seems that the german vessel is a scientific ship, doing some kind of researches in the Atlantic Ocean. For what I know they have to keep on their duty. And someone told me that they'll land the 13th of february, in Martinica. But there's time to find out more about this.

I'm very sorry but this week end I'm travelling and connecting is more difficult of what I thought. Yesterday evening at the end it wasn't possible to update you. I'm doing it now just to tell you that after 15 days of short messages, is very nice to ear again Marco's voice. He told me with more details things that more or less we know. Now I'm leaving and I'll be back in Milano late at night. Most likeley - if they'd send me an update - I'll be able to write only tomorrow morning. Ciao!

Marco e Naida stanno bene come sempre, ma la sensazione è che si stiano facendo davvero una traversata faticosa. Da 4 giorni non vedono il sole e si sono beccati un bel po' di temporali.
Purtroppo, per ora, non vedo cambiamenti. Continueranno ad avere queste condizioni di vento e di mare per altri due giorni. Ahimé.

Se guardate i valori delle coordinate che pubblico ogni giorno (e che mi arrivano da Butch) noterete che mentre la latitudine (l'altezza rispetto all'equatore) varia di poco, quella che varia è la longitudine. Precisamente percorrono qualcosa più di due gradi di circonferenza di longitudine al giorno. Vi dico questo perché le coordinate del punto di arrivo sono 11.28N 60.21W. Oggi Butch è intorno ai 38-39W. Questo vuol dire che per arrivare a 60 ci vorranno ancora nove giorni circa. Il conto è facile e del resto lo avevamo detto che sarebbero stati circa quindici giorni (oggi è il sesto...).

Quanto alla situazione a bordo il messaggio è chiaro. Il morale è alto, ma vento e mare non mollano. E Marco e Naida stanno lavorando più di quel che pensavano. Probabilmente stanno molto al timone (mentre speravano che il timone a vento avrebbe fatto gran parte del lavoro). Ma la presenza di onde incrociate (che arrivano cioé da più direzioni) e il vento sostenuto evidentemente rende necessario essere più presenti in pozzetto.

If you look at the grid references of the geographical position that I give you every day (actually they give it to me) you will notice that, while the latitude (the height above the equator) doesn't change a lot, the longitude grows at the daily ratio of more then two degrees. I tell you this 'cause the grid references of Tobago (the arrival) are 11.28N 60.21W. Today Butch is at 38-39W (more or less). This means that to get there it should take nine days more. In effect at the beginning we were talking of a two weeks crossing...

On board the situation is pretty clear. The mood is high, but wind and sea are still pushing. And Marco and Niada are working more of what they could expect. Probably they spend most of the time at the helm (while tehir hope was to leave that task at the windhelm they have on board). But the presence of a choppy seas, with quite big waves coming from different angles, and the strong wind force them to be more active in the cockpit area.

Scusate il ritardo. Certi giorni succedono cose inattese e oggi era uno di quelli. E così solo ora riesco a sedere qui e scrivere, smentendo cosa avevo detto qualche giorno fa.

Il titolo di questo post è duplice. Perché da una parte guardando la carta viene da pensare che un giorno, svoltata una boa ideale, fittizia, piantata da qualche parte là nell'oceano, Marco e Naida inizieranno ad andare in discesa. Dall'altra bisogna anhe ammettere che i ragazzi sono un po' in salita in questi giorni: c'è più vento e più mare e il messaggio, condensa in poche parole il fatto che stanno lavorando un po' a bordo.

Eccolo:

"Già 25 nodi di vento, mare molto formato, sempre nuvolo dopo 6 giorni il capitano dice che vuole 50 euro l'ora cioè 1200 al giorno per rifare la traversata."

Marco è stato sempre uno dai prezzi piuttosto alti :-)
Domani vi aggiorno in dettaglio sulle previsioni, che per i prossimi due giorni davano un po' di vento e di mare. Per ora vi basti sapere che va tutto bene.

Sorry for the delay. There are days when unexpected things happen and today it was one fo those for me. So only now I can sit here and write, contraddicting something I said a few days ago.

Anyhow, the title of this post has a double meaning. On one side, looking at their position on the map, one thinks that one of these days they'll pass a virtual buoy, somewhere in the middle of the ocean, and they'll start to go downhill. On the other side one must admit that Marco and Naida are going a little uphill in this moment: there's more wind and more swell and the message, in a nutshell, says that they're working a little more of what they expected.

This is it:

"We already have 25 knots and the swell is strong. It's always cloudy and after 6 days the captain says that he wants 50 euro for one hour (i.e.1200 euro a day) for making the crossing again "

Marco has always had expensive fares :-)
Tomorrow I'll try to give you a look on the weather forecast for the next days, but for at least two days more there will be no variations. For now it's enough knowing that everything is ok.

Cominciano a essere in mezzo, eh?!

Se facciamo i conti hanno percorso circa 135 miglia x 4= 540miglia = 900 km circa. In macchina bastavano nove ore. Se vi piacciono le macchine.

Questo il messaggio, che vi giro quasi in contemporanea alla ricezione (è di venti minuti fa):

Per una volta invece di pubblicare i messaggi alla lettera vi faccio un sunto. Ne ho infatti ricevuti tre, a ore diverse. Mi dicono che

stanno bene
mangiano bene (glielo avevo chiesto)
vorrebbero che il vento fosse più regolare da est
vorrebbero altri pareri sui pesci volanti (uno solo è troppo poco)
stanotte hanno avuto un temporale con vento a 30 nodi e pioggia
si lamentano che gli alisei non sono così costanti come dicono
stanno lavorando molto

nella mappa la posizione alle 17.00 di oggi. Se vi sembra che non sia cambiato niente da ieri guardate bene: hanno fatto altre 133 miglia!


For this time I prefer to give you a synthesis of the three messages I received at different times.

they're eating well (I asked them this)
they would like that the wind was more steady in strength AND direction
they'd like to receive more opinions about flying fishes. One is not enough

Ecco il messaggio di oggi. Le previsioni per domani dicono sostanzialmente lo stesso. Forse un po' di vento in più. Ma così a occhio dovrebbero andare avanti bene almeno per altri 2 gg. Poi si vedrà.

"Few wind, less wavy sea, but always choppy and a little bothering. We're sailing with tail winds. with the jib and staysail wide open."

This is today's message.
For tomorrow the weather forecast should be stable. Maybe a little wind more. But we guess they shouldn't have any problem at least for the next two days. Then we'll see.

Eccoci qua. Il primo messaggio da Butch, 24 h circa dopo la partenza.

E poi subito dopo una domanda che aspetta risposta.

"I pesci volanti sono commestibili?"

Potrei andare su google e cercare una risposta. Ma mi sembra più carino che siate voi lettori ignoti a rispondere. Così magari facciamo la vostra conoscenza e mi sento meno solo... Qualcuno sa se i pesci volanti si mangiano?

Comunque, se vi interessa Butch sta viaggiando su rotta 266 (gradi di bussola). Ha percorso 138 miglia al momento dell'invio del messaggio. E se cliccate qui potete vedere la loro posizione sulla mappa.

Partendo di nuovo/Leaving once again

Oggi Marco e Naida partono. L'ora ancora non la sappiamo (poco fa ho ricevuto una mail quindi li immagino ancora a terra, ma non dovrebbe mancare molto). Ma sarà oggi di sicuro.

Riprenderò quindi a fornirvi regolarmente le loro notizie. E sarà anche più facile perché prima ero in giro anch'io per il mondo. Mentre ora sono seduto qui, davanti a questo monitor, super connesso...

Ho ricevuto alcune foto da Capo Verde. Le pubblicherò man mano per darvi un po' di illustrazioni.

Capo Verde non e' male una specie di Africa piu' morbida, un sacco di vento.... siamo stati molto contenti di essereci fermati ma la voglia di ripartire e terminare il viaggio e' naturalmente piu' forte.
Abbiamo incontrato un po' di gente interessante... sopratutto francesi ma anche due signori americani che sono in giro per il mondo da 8 anni... hanno circa 70 anni a testa..
Anche loro andranno verso west come tutti qui.
Ci sono circa 70 barche che chi prima chi dopo attraverseranno... zero italiani...

Ecco, siamo contenti ed emozionati, adesso partiamo speriamo di impiegare circa 14 giorni ad una media di 140 miglia al giorno. L'intera rotta e di 2093 miglia marine...

Hi everybody. Today Marco and Naida are leaving. We still do not know exactly at what time, but soon (even if few minutes ago they were still on land, since I received a couple of mail from them).

I'll start again to broadcast to you all the news that I'll receive. And its' going to be easier, since before I was around Europe as well, while now I'm sitting at my desk, behind this monitor, very connected... :-(

I received some pictures from Cabe Verde. I will use them during these coming days as iconography, just to make a little more interesting and coluored this blog.
I leave you with this short text from Marco and Naida, addressed to you all that read this blog. Here it is:

Cabe Verde it's not bad: kinda of Africa, but smooother, and with a lot of wind. We have been very happy that we stopped here, but we're anxious to move and kep on the travel.
We met a lot of interesting people: mainly french people, but also two americans, about 70 years old, that are travelling from 8 years... They too are westbound, as everybody else here: about 70 boats here are ready to cross. And no italians among them...

We're happy and emotined and now we hope that the crossing is gonna take 14 days, travelling at 140 nm daily..

Arrivando a Capo verde/Approaching Cabe Verde

Ecco alcune immagini ricevute da Butch poco fa. Attendiamo da loro anche una comunicazione scritta e forse un video in serata. Molti di voi avranno già potuto comunicare direttamente con l'equipaggio. Per tutti gli altri ovviamente ottime notizie da Capo Verde, dove Butch è arrivato ieri, perfettamente puntuale e perfettamente a suo agio, nonostante i venti deboli del finale che hanno costretto a usare il motore e nonostante una molto fastidiosa onda incrociata.

Molto probabilmente la partenza per la traversata vera e propria sarà venerdì.









Here some images just received from Butch. We're waiting from them also something written and maybe in the evening a video. Many of you probably have already spoken with them. All the others have to know that, as preview, Butch harrived happily yesterday in Cabe Verde, perfectly on time and easy, in spite of the lack of wind in the last day (that forced them to use the engine) and of a quite disturbing swell.

In the title the last position given from Butch. After a night without wind, during the day they found some easterly wind (10 knots). They look forward for some more wind, and their hopes are supported from the first clouds seen this morning, wich are a typical sign for trade winds.

Il primo messaggio ricevuto da bordo di Butch.

Fatte 200 miglia. Mare formato e incrociato. Molto blu. Vento di poppa.

Sintetico come tutti quelli che seguiranno. Ci dice una cosa buona: vanno a vela e con vento che li spinge. Chiaramente c'è un po' di mare, forse più di quanto si aspettassero.

Le previsioni future sono tranquille. Brezze dai 15 ai 20 nodi. Mare ancora un po' rotto e incrociato, in attenuazione.
